Students enrolled in American Studies degree modules have the flexibility of choosing their courses from a wide variety of subjects, including English, History, Film Studies, Anthropology, and Political Science. The second-year course American Studies 2200E: Advanced American Studies, is required for all modules. For all American Studies degree requirements and course options, please refer to the Western Academic Calendar. Any course substitutions must be approved by the Undergraduate Program Advisor.

Important: All American Studies degree modules have been revised and updated effective September 1, 2013. Please refer to the Western Academic Calendar for current information on admission and course requirements. More detailed course information can be found in our undergraduate program brochure. We offer four modules of study that students may enter following the first year:

Admission Requirements

American Cultural Studies Honors Specialization

Completion of first-year requirements with no failures. Students must have an average of at least 70% in 3.0 principal courses including American Studies 1020, plus 2.0 additional courses from Political Science 1020E, a first-year History, or a first-year English, with no mark in these principal courses below 60%.

Canadian-American Relations Honors Specialization

Completion of first-year requirements with no failures. Students must have an average of at least 70% in 3.0 principal courses including American Studies 1020, and Political Scence 1020E, plus 1.0 additional course from a first-year History or first-year English, with no mark in these principal courses below 60%.

Major and Minor modules

Completion of first-year requirements, including American Studies 1020 and 1.0 course from Political Science 1020E, a first-year History, or a first-year English with a minimum mark of 60%.
